dying to help

END of Life Planning Facilitator, death educator and Funeral Celebrant

Breaking the last taboo with compassion, expertise, and open conversations about death and dying.

About Emma

I’m Emma Satchell, founder and Executive Director of Dying to Help CIC. I’m a funeral celebrant, death doula, end of life planning facilitator and death educator, working with people before, during and after death.

My work is about making the uncomfortable more comfortable. That might mean helping someone plan ahead, walking alongside a person and their people as they approach the end of life, creating a funeral that feels true to the person who has died, or getting a room full of people talking honestly about mortality.

I’m an ordained minister, a member of End of Life Doula UK, a certified celebrant with the Academy of Professional Celebrants, and I’ve adopted the Funeral Celebrancy Council’s Funeral Celebrant Accord. I bring together years of experience in funeral celebrancy, chaplaincy, end of life support and community death education.

I don’t believe death needs to be hidden away, dressed up in euphemisms or treated as something we should only talk about when we have no choice. I believe good information, honest conversation and the right support can make a real difference.

Why is Dying to Help a C.I.C?

Dying to Help is a Community Interest Company because this work isn’t about profit. It’s about people. Death comes for all of us, yet access to support, planning, and honest conversation is often uneven. We’re here to level that out. We believe everyone deserves space to talk openly about death, to make choices that feel right for them, and to be treated with dignity — whether they’ve got family rallying round or they’re walking this path alone.

So the money stays in the work. Anything we make gets poured back into keeping things accessible: free sessions, low-cost places, resources people can actually use, and reaching those who usually get overlooked. Our webshop reflects this too — every resource is priced in three ways. Fair Price covers the real cost of producing the work. Pay It Forward helps open the door for someone else. And Open Door means if money’s tight, you can ask for a discount code. No questions. No judgement. This is community-supported, community-held work.

We're also currently exploring the most effective way for people to donate directly to the work — something simple, transparent, and accountable. Once that’s in place, anyone who wants to support this mission can, whether that’s a one-off contribution or a steady monthly gift to keep more doors open, more chairs pulled up to the table.

Services

Funeral Celebrant

Ceremonies that feel true.
Every life deserves a farewell that’s personal. I’ll work with you to shape a ceremony that’s honest, meaningful, and right for the person who has died.

That might mean something traditional, something completely non-religious, something faith-based, or something that sits somewhere in between. It might be simple and quiet, or it might include stories, music, ritual, humour, participation or something a little less conventional.

My job is to listen carefully, understand who this person was, and help create a funeral that feels like them.

Death Doula Support

Support for living, dying and everything around it.
Death doula support is about having someone alongside you when life feels uncertain or difficult to navigate.

I offer practical and emotional support to people approaching the end of life and those close to them, whether that means helping with conversations, plans, questions or simply making space to talk honestly about what’s happening.

I’m a member of End of Life Doula UK and work in a practical, person-led way, shaped around what matters most to you.

End of Life Planning

Planning ahead, your way.
End of life planning gives you the chance to think about what matters to you, make your wishes known and take some of the guesswork away from your people.

I can help you explore the practical, personal and emotional decisions around future care, dying, funerals and what you want to leave behind. You don’t need to have all the answers before we start.

Our club is a safe space to discuss, reflect, and learn about this inevitable part of life. Whether you're a bookworm or just curious about the subject, all are welcome to participate.

Each month, we'll select a new book to read and come together for a virtual discussion. Let's embrace our curiosity and explore the mysteries of life and death together!

Get Mortal Cafes

Talking about death doesn’t have to be uncomfortable - it can be empowering, healing, and even uplifting.

Our Get Mortal Cafe is a free, gathering either online (bring your own cuppa) or in person in a relaxed café setting,

where real people come together to talk openly about death, dying, and everything in between.

Hosted by Emma, an experienced funeral celebrant and end-of-life planner, these sessions offer a welcoming space for community, support, and meaningful conversations.

Whether you have personal experiences to share, questions about planning, or just a curiosity to explore, you’ll find a group of like-minded people ready to break the silence around death.

There’s no agenda - just open discussion, shared stories, and the chance to connect over coffee. Come as you are, bring your questions, and let’s start the conversation together.

Talking honestly about death can help us make clearer choices, feel less afraid and live more fully. Whether you’re planning ahead, facing the end of life, arranging a funeral or simply starting the conversation, I’m here to help make the uncomfortable more comfortable.

Why dying to help?

Experience that spans the whole journey: My work isn’t limited to one part of death and dying. I support people with planning, doula support, funerals and community death education, bringing experience from celebrancy, chaplaincy and end of life work.

Personal, not prescribed: There’s no single right way to approach death. I work with people as they are, whether they have faith, no faith, clear wishes, complicated feelings or no idea where to begin.

Honest Conversations: I use plain language and make space for the difficult stuff. Death doesn’t need to be hidden behind euphemisms or avoided until the last possible moment.

Support that's practical as well as emotional: Sometimes what helps is a conversation. Sometimes it’s information, planning, advocacy, ritual, questions, resources or simply having someone alongside you while you work out what matters
